Life Insurance
The Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission (GIC) offers eligible employees optional life insurance & accidental death and dismemberment coverage options. Insurance Types and Guides
Basic Life Insurance
If you have enrolled in a health plan with GIC, you will also gain $5,000 of basic life insurance coverage. Life insurance is administered by GIC and the carrier is The Hartford. UMass Boston covers 75% of your Basic Life Insurance premiums. Employees are responsible for the remaining 25%, which is deducted biweekly from your paycheck on a pre-tax basis.
Life Insurance Plan Rates.Optional Term Life Insurance with AD&D
You may purchase additional optional group term life insurance (for employee only) at low-cost group rates. You may enroll in up to 8 times your annual salary without medical evidence of insurability as a new hire. If you enroll at a later date, you will need to prove medical evidence of insurability (unless you have a qualifying event due to a marriage, birth, divorce or death, supported by documented proof within 60 days of change).
How to Apply
Eligible employees may enroll for coverage upon hire into a benefited position with coverage, effective the first day of the month following 60 days of covered employment.
Applications for Optional Term Life Insurance requested after initial employment are reviewed based on a medical evidence of insurability information and may be denied on that basis. The premiums (based on amount of coverage, an employee's age and if the employee is a smoker or non-smoker) appear in the GIC Benefit Decision Guide.

Optional Retirement Program (ORP)
Members of the Massachusetts Optional Retirement Program are provided a life insurance policy as part of that benefit.
Long-Term Disability Coverage
You may purchase LTD coverage as a new hire or during Annual Enrollment. Your long term disability is administered by GIC and the carrier is Unum. Coverage begins when you are continually disabled for more than 90 days. The plan will pay 55% of your pre-tax income, up to a maximum of $10,000 per month.
- Employee Cost: Plan based on age/salary.
- Enrollment Due Date: If elected, coverage begins on the first of the month following 60 days of employment. You must enroll within 10 days of your initial start date.
